As the Chief Information Officer of the 10th largest city in the U.S., Vijay is responsible for shaping the strategic direction for the Capital of Silicon Valley, leading an IT Department of over 91 employees, and overseeing its annual $18 million operating budget. During his career, Vijay has also worked for notable Silicon Valley technology firms Hewlett-Packard and McAfee.com, as well as the fiercely competitive world of advertising.
Vijay is multi-disciplined in the areas of application development, infrastructure scaling, personnel and project management. Known as an innovative and strategic problem solver, the City benefits from Vijay's strengths as he drives toward commoditizing the City’s IT services. Vijay has been helping the City meet the challenges presented by both the dynamic world of technology and high expectations from the community, delivering new and enhanced services during the most challenging economic times to face local municipalities in recent history.
By focusing on priorities, partnerships, and people, Vijay is committed to finding better ways to use technology to become more efficient and responsive. He challenges the status quo on a daily basis, and strives to accelerate the pace of innovation by leveraging unique opportunities such as public/private partnerships. Among many notable projects, Vijay is credited with implementing the nation’s fastest outdoor mesh wireless network with industry leaders Ruckus Wireless and SmartWave Technologies. This “next generation” downtown WiFi network serves residents, businesses, visitors, and the City’s own operations with a single infrastructure.
Vijay holds a bachelor’s of degree in information technology from Western Governors University. As a resident of San José, he embodies the notion of “ live, work and play in San Jose,” which often guides his technology investment decisions. Vijay is often quoted as saying, “Let’s not do technology for technology’s sake…”
