A Solution for Android Fragmentation

— March 23, 2013

Red Bend Software, a provider of Mobile Software Management (MSM) has released a firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updating solution that addresses the problem of Android fragmentation.

With version 8.0 of vRapid Mobile FOTA software, Android manufacturers can repartition flash memory to perform FOTA updates of new OS versions no matter how large the size of the new Android OS.

The solution enables manufacturers to accommodate future Android OS firmware versions of any size with a patented repartitioning capability that allows manufacturers to dynamically adjust flash memory partitions on deployed devices, assuring consumers have continuous access to new Android features and improvements.

With the repartitioning capability, manufacturers can add new partitions, as well as move, shrink and expand existing partitions at any time, ensuring that mobile devices with enough CPU power and RAM can be updated with even the largest of Android upgrades.

Red Bend’s software is inside more than 200 Android devices developed by 25 of the top Android smartphone and tablet manufacturers including LG, Samsung, Sony, Sharp and Panasonic.

The company announced on March 20th that it has extended its multi-year global license agreement with Sony Mobile Communications to provide its firmware over-the-air updating for the Xperia portfolio of products. Since 2004, Red Bend has provided vRapid Mobile and vDirect Mobile for standards-based configuration and device management in more than 140 Sony Mobile-branded devices.
