Apps Ruled First Half of 2012

By Lori Castle, Editor In Chief — July 30, 2012

Mobile Enterprise editors took a look back at the headlines for the first half of this year and apps ruled the top five. These most read stories each took a different approach to apps ranging from which existing apps were most popular for the enterprise, to development strategy and control.

Here's what everyone was reading:

1. The Top Ten Mobile Apps in the Enterprise
Given the intense state of mobility within the enterprise, Mobile Enterprise Magazine conducted research to examine what business processes companies had spent their time and money mobilizing during 2011, and what enterprises are most likely to find themselves mobilizing in 2012. This report on the Top 10 mobile applications is included with analysis.

2. HTML5 vs. Native Mobile App Development
This whitepaper from Verivo and VDC Research provides and overview of the persistent debate in choosing the right mobile development strategy for your business: native mobile applications vs. HTML5 web apps. The paper includes key findings from a survey of software developers experience in both.

3. Mobile Enterprise Application Platforms
A supplement to Mobile Enterprise Magazine, this section answers the question: “What exactly is a MEAP?” While not able to control smartphones in this BYOD environment, mobile applications are another thing entirely. Any business can exert complete control over mobile apps, especially those large scale mobile applications that will, or already do, serve as a strategic corporate initiative. Two case studies of real-world successes are also included.

4. Top Five Tablets in the Enterprise - Today...and Tomorrow
Although the iPad's market growth across all market segments — consumer and enterprise — has been nothing short of phenomenal, and has generally given rise to the notion that 2012 will very likely be dubbed the year of the tablet, we are in fact still in the early days of these mobile devices, and it isn't necessarily clear how things will evolve over the next 12 to 18 months. See which other tablets made the list.

5. Mobilizer Awards
The Mobilizer Awards honor public and private enterprises across all industries - including government - that have transformed their businesses by deploying wireless mobile solutions. Now in its 11th year, the Mobilizer Awards recognize deployments in Field Service, Mobile Device Management solutions, Enterprise-Wide Mobility Deployment and Mobilizing Business Applications. In addition, and new this year, the Mobilizer Awards will recognize the Most Innovative Use of Mobile Technology in 2012.
