Fixmo and Joyent Partner on Secure BYOD Management in the Cloud

By Jessica Binns, Contributing Editor
Mobile risk company Fixmo is working with Joyent, a cloud computing provider, to deliver cloud-based mobile security and corporate data protection solutions to enable secure, managed and compliant BYOD deployments in a scalable cloud environment.

The companies will jointly offer Fixmo's defense-grade mobile solutions for BYOD security, device management, data loss prevention (DLP) and compliance assurance through Joyent's carrier-grade SmartOS and SmartDataCenter cloud infrastructure.

Organizations around the world are now embracing the BYOD approach, allowing personal smartphones and tablets to access business applications and private corporate data. While BYOD can increase employee productivity and satisfaction, it also brings with it significant risks related to corporate data leakage and increased exposure to cyber attacks and policy violations.

Fixmo's mobile risk management solution addresses these challenges through a secure sandbox on BYOD smartphones and tablets that keeps all corporate email, browsing, documents and applications securely contained and under IT control without impacting the personal side of the device. Fixmo also provides advanced mobile device management (MDM) and security monitoring capabilities that can lock down access to all corporate data and apps in the event a device has been compromised, tampered with or placed into a vulnerable state.

"BYOD security and management has quickly become a critical topic for our growing base of wireless operator partners and enterprise customers," said Jason Hoffman, founder and CTO with Joyent. "By partnering with Fixmo, we can now offer them the most advanced mobile security and compliance solutions for BYOD on a massively-scalable architecture whether they are deploying public, private or hybrid cloud infrastructure."

Leading service providers choose Joyent's cloud software to quickly bring new products to market and successfully pursue new business opportunities. Through the partnership, Joyent will empower these providers—including wireless operators and public cloud service providers, as well as government agencies and enterprise customers deploying their own private clouds—to deploy the following products as pre-configured services running on theJoyent SmartOS:

  • Fixmo Sentinel, the mobile risk management platform that provides mobile device management, security and integrity monitoring, policy compliance and auditable reporting;
  • Fixmo SafeZone, the secure sandbox for BYOD that keeps all corporate email, browsing, documents and apps encrypted, contained and under IT control;
  • Fixmo SafeGuard, the application security software development kit (SDK) that enables organizations to secure their custom business apps and manage them on BYOD devices.
Leaders in Cloud and Mobile Security

The two companies bring significant experience in pushing the security and compliance capabilities of the cloud and mobile devices. Joyent is the only cloud software provider that delivers persistent, enterprise-class infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solutions built from the ground up to provide integrated security frameworks along with web application and company-level isolation.

Fixmo's mobile security and risk management solutions have been developed as part of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. National Security Agency and are deployed throughout the public and private sector as a proven solution for securing mobile devices, protecting sensitive data and proving regulatory compliance.

The joint solution offering will be available to Joyent and Fixmo customers and partners in the second half of 2012.
