Egnyte has introduced Storage Connect to provide a file sharing solution for files too sensitive to be stored in the public cloud.  Users can now access all of the files they need to run their business, no matter where they’re stored, whether in any on-premise, in any cloud, or by connecting any storage device to any cloud.

The expanded solution enables businesses to easily share even their most sensitive files, while still meeting their industry’s regulatory requirements.

A recent IDG study reports that 3/5 of companies believe that cloud file sharing has compromised their data security. Respondents also reported that, on average, 61% of all files would always need to be stored locally because IT has low confidence in the security of cloud-only storage methods. Storage Connect provides businesses with a secure way to access and share these files from a smartphone, tablet or computer without going to the cloud, eliminating the various security threats associated with cloud-only solutions.

“Enterprises will always have files that cannot be stored in the cloud due to government regulations, privacy or intellectual property concerns,” said Vineet Jain, CEO, Egnyte. “These are often the most valuable to an organization, so providing private access to these files when and where business happens is critical. Many companies haven’t embraced the cloud due to these exact concerns. We believe the addition of Storage Connect will enable companies of all sizes to fully embrace the cloud era without compromising their privacy or security.”

Gartner analysts have defined file sensitivity with a green, yellow and red color scheme to identify files with low, medium and high sensitivity. Green files can be shared freely without security or privacy concerns, while red files, such as financials and M&A materials, should never pass outside the company via the cloud. To satisfy these security requirements, enterprises using a cloud-only file sharing-solution would need separate VPN access in order to share their most sensitive red files. Storage Connect eliminates this headache by allowing easy and secure access to all levels of files, even the “red” ones, from any device and any location, without a VPN.

Use Cases:

  • Cloud File Sharing – easy mobile access and collaboration from anywhere, using any device.

  • Private File Sharing – remote file access to storage behind the firewall using any smartphone, tablet or computer, without the need for VPN.

  • Local File Access – blazing fast, in-office file access to address issues with latency, business continuity, large-file workloads and network congestion.

  • Cross-Office Collaboration – sync heterogeneous storage devices across distributed offices, enabling remote teams to collaborate as if they’re in the same room.
“The beauty of online file sharing an collaboration solutions is that they address a wide variety of use cases, from NAS and VPN replacement to content management,” said ESG analyst Terri McClure. “This horizontal application within businesses is great but creates a challenge for IT in choosing a single solution to manage all of its data due to varying security, collaboration, and mobile access requirements.

"Egnyte's Storage Connect offers a solution by giving IT flexibility to store and manage different types of data, whether it be sensitive or confidential data behind the firewall, or outbound marketing materials on a public cloud platform all from one control plane.”

Mobile Risk: Security Is Not a Game

IDC predicts 2 billion mobile devices will be shipped by 2017, while Gartner expects a 26 billion Internet of Things installed base (excluding smartphones and tablets) by 2020. With more devices, more machines, more connectivity comes more risk.
