Report: Apple Still King of Enterprise Mobile Device Activations

By Gerard Longo, Assistant Editor
Good Technology has released its device activation report for the second half of 2012, which examines the activation and use of mobile devices and operating systems within corporations.

Interestingly, Android saw some big gains – Android smartphone usage among corporations nearly doubled from its first quarter numbers – but it is Apple that still appears in the driver’s seat of the enterprise.

This was due in large part to the popularity of the iPhone 4S, which accounted for the most enterprise activations of any device for the quarter with 30.8 percent. This total contributed to iOS, between its iPhone and iPad devices, accounting for more than 70 percent of total device activations for the quarter.

A Slow Enterprise Ascent for Android

From quarter to quarter, Android smart device usage in the enterprise grew 10 percent, and two Android devices – the Samsung Galaxy SII and the Motorola Droid Razr – accounted for 7.8 of all mobile device activations in the enterprise in the second quarter.

Android also saw a moderate increase in activation of its tablet devices, which was almost non-existent in the first quarter of the year. The number increased from .07 percent to 5.5 percent. This, coupled with the rise in Android smartphone use in the enterprise, suggests that more companies are slowly beginning to warm up to Android’s enterprise solutions.

Tablet Activations Dominated by iOS, But Still Dwarfed by Smartphones

The iPad accounted for the rest of the tablet activations in Q2, therefore holding an overwhelming lead over Android tablets with 94.5 percent of all activations.

However, smartphones are still king of the mobile world, besting tablet activations by nearly a three-to-one margin (73% to 27%).

What About Windows?

Windows Mobile made its first appearance in Good’s quarterly report with the Windows Phone accounting for 1.2 percent of all enterprise mobile device activations in Q2 following the release of Windows 7.5 support in April.

While that number may not seem at all large in the shadow of Android and, especially, iOS, Good’s report suggest that it could increase in future quarters. The introduction of more Windows mobile devices, coupled with the launch of Windows 8, could help Microsoft catapult itself into a battle for second place in the enterprise.

Many Industries Moving Toward Mobile

Government, manufacturing and retail deployments all increased in the quarter. Government deployments increased in the quarter from 5 percent to 8 percent of total activations, while manufacturing and retail activations accounted for 7 and 5 percent, respectively. This information suggests that mobility is indeed moving beyond the world of IT into a wider scope of industries.

“Mobility is not simply another device for IT to support or hurdle to overcome. Rather, it’s a much broader shift to new way to empower employees, customers and partners with new applications to connect and collaborate as never before,” said John Herrema, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy for Good Technology. "Our device activations report shows that more and more of our customers—across all industries—are really embracing mobility as a new strategy for boosting productivity and business insight. We expect to see continued growth of support for iOS, Android and Windows platforms in Q3 as more of these devices come to market and our customers continue to expand their enterprise mobility programs."
