Samsung School Transforms Education

— June 30, 2014

Designed for a more intuitive and hands-on experience, Samsung released major updates to the fully-integrated, one-to-one learning solution, Samsung School—available for school districts for the 2014-2015 academic year.

The solution has experienced rapid adoption with deployments in nearly 50 countries worldwide, and large-scale implementations in schools ranging from elementary to high school. It combines Samsung Galaxy tablets, large-format classroom displays and other technology, melded together with powerful interactive management software to create a student-centric learning environment. The latest version (Samsung School v1.5.6) will be compatible with the new Galaxy Tab 4 Education—Samsung’s first tablet specifically designed to support one-to-one learning and providing support for Google Play for Education.

Tod Pike, Senior Vice President at Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division, said, "Samsung School creates a dynamic digital classroom environment, melding together classroom technology with interactive teaching tools to improve student outcomes. Now available on the Galaxy Tab 4 Education, it’s a scalable solution that is ideal for districts seeking to deliver a new learning experience that is more personalized and participatory."

Enabling Teacher Productivity
In addition to popular classroom management tools such as screen sharing, student screen monitoring and device control, the solution provides enhanced usability, fosters greater collaboration and offers additional configuration options. Teachers can now create a customized Lesson Toolbar providing the ability to instantly launch an app on all student devices, send a resource or URL, or initiate a group activity.

With the newly designed and more intuitive user interface, educators can create advanced quizzes that allow students to answer with images, sketches and other multimedia. Group collaboration features enable students to simultaneously contribute on a shared screen using personal tablets, or merge individual assignments into one to submit seamless group projects.

Supporting District Needs
Samsung School is available in several packages and configurations for school districts to choose from, depending on their needs. With the latest version, districts can build their system with or without a school server. With "class mode," course material and student information can be managed using a teacher’s PC or tablet within the classroom, while "school mode" uses a central server and can be used to share materials with teachers and students in other classes.

Samsung plans to make an EDU SDK (Software Developers Kit) available to partners and developers that will enable them to integrate Samsung School’s in-class features and device management capabilities into their own apps for Galaxy tablets. The developer kit, which will be available globally this fall, will further expand the Samsung School ecosystem.

Developing 21st-Century Skills
As one of the first U.S. schools to license the solution, Eloy Elementary School District experienced greater student engagement and nearly 100% student attendance at time of rollout due to excitement for the new curriculum. Doddridge County Schools recently deployed 16 Samsung School classrooms at its middle school and is preparing for a similar initiative in its high school this fall.

"Students at Doddridge County Schools are digital natives, so classrooms must provide a technology-driven learning environment that meets their needs," said Doddridge Superintendent Ora Coffman. "Samsung School better enables us to help students develop the critical 21st century skills needed for their futures in college and the workforce."
