Survey: 84 Percent Of Businesses Will Support Personal iPads

The iPad's value as a business tool, the subject of much scrutiny, has been affirmed in surprisingly overwhelming numbers in an informal survey just conducted by Citrix.

Prior to the close of the online survey, nearly 500 had already participated, Citrix reported (the survey concluded on May 31, 2010).

According to Citrix, the survey's findings indicate 84 percent of organizations will support personal iPads, and 50 percent of those who participated in the survey said they expect their organization to purchase the devices for them.

Respondents cited increased mobility as a key benefit of the iPad: 90 percent said the ability to work remotely was a big plus and 74 percent indicated improved productivity and satisfaction.

Some of the other preliminary findings from the survey include:

- 80 percent will purchase and use the iPad for business.
- Those who participated said the primary apps they will use on the iPad are from the productivity category (87 percent)
- 90 percent of respondents said they will use the iPad for business email, closely followed by the ability to view, edit and create presentations. Nearly 60 percent of respondents indicated that they will use the iPad for online meetings and to access critical business information.

"The high level of support for personal iPads seems to reinforce the notion that the iPad will be the door opener for ("bring your own computer") at many companies," wrote Chris Fleck of Citrix in a blog. "The fact that IT can safely provide access to company apps, data and virtual desktops without managing the device will make the iPad a game changer for business beyond just the form factor and features. This device will provide the leading example of how IT can keep control of the data, apps and compliance yet enable their users to maximize their choice and productivity from anywhere."

Fleck did acknowledge that the survey did not gauge a cross section of all businesses, "rather it is mostly comprised of (participation from) Citrix customers and those that have come to our website and have interest enough in the iPad to take a short survey."
