Tucson PD Increases Officer Safety and Efficiency with Ultra-Mobile-Rugged Toughbook U1

— November 12, 2010

In order to enhance law enforcement safety and efficiency, the Tucson Police Department has equipped their motorcycle officers with fully-rugged Panasonic Toughbook U1 ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs).

Prior to utilizing Toughbook U1 devices, motorcycle officers in the traffic enforcement division of the Tucson Police Department could not access the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system and were, therefore, cut off from critical information when working in the field. Instead, officers had to rely on radio transmissions for running criminal background checks.

To address these issues, the department selected the MIL-STD-810G certified and IP65-rated Toughbook U1 ultra-mobile PC, with a 5.6" sunlight-viewable touchscreen to help them more effectively issue e-tickets and perform other tasks in all types of weather conditions.

"We needed a handheld computer that could run a full Windows OS and provide us with reliable wireless access to our CAD from anywhere in the city," says Sergeant Jerry Skeenes of the traffic enforcement division of Tucson PD. "And that's before factoring in the extreme heat, sandstorms, and summer monsoons we face while on patrols, which required us to select the Toughbook U1 rugged handheld."

The Tucson Police Department has seen significant time savings since implementing the Toughbook U1 solution. Officers can now quickly run background checks and save the radio transmissions for more critical issues.

With the Toughbook U1, Tucson's motorcycle officers have a reliable partner to more effectively and efficiently protect their community. Integrated with Gobi2000 mobile broadband technology, the Toughbook U1 is an ultra mobile PC that integrates the portability of a handheld computer, the benefits of a full-function Windows operating system, and the durability required for enterprise applications. The UMPC has a fanless all-weather design to reduce noise and weight, twin hot-swappable batteries to prevent battery failure disruption, and a magnesium alloy chassis to deliver protection from bumps and drops of up to six feet.

The Toughbook U1 provides officers in the field with the functionality and power to capture and share mission-critical information in real time.
