Upstart Launches Java-Based, Single-Code App Development Tool

By Gerard Longo, Assistant Editor — July 16, 2012

A new, Java-based platform which allows mobile application developers to native create mobile apps across multiple platforms with a single code base has been launched, courtesy of two former Sun Microsystems engineers.

Shai Almog and Chen Fishbein have launched Codename One, an app development tool that they believe cuts costs and time in creating mobile applications compatible with every major operating system, including Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows 7 Phone and more.

In an official press release from Codename One, Almog stated his and Fishbein's belief that this new technology is going to change the way developers create and launch their applications.

“Chen and I are thrilled to be releasing this transformational technology that is filling a growing demand among mobile developers,” said Almog, “The wasteful reality of having to develop the same app multiple times due to the variety of operating systems in the market is coming to a close. With Codename One, developers can write applications just once and run them everywhere.”

Important to the process of developing Codename One was drawing all components from scratch, helping developers avoid fragmentation and prevent the unnecessary reduction in free space and performance. This allows developers to easily create as many apps as they'd like - the first 100 apps created with Codename One are free, and premium app development features are available starting at $9 per month.
