Healthcare Alert: Smartphone Tool Monitors Hemopheliacs

By PRESS RELEASE — September 15, 2008

MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Trust Digital, the leading enterprise mobility management provider, announced that CSL Behring has deployed its mobility management platform to secure the HeliTraxSM system.

HeliTraxSM is a web-based application that quickly and easily tracks patient medical data including patient records, contact information and detailed test data including medical events, an inventory of test medication and a history of medication usage.

The HeliTrax application revolutionizes doctor-patient communication by replacing paper collection of data with an electronic process that captures patient information on smartphones and relays it wirelessly to the HeliTrax server.

HeliTrax is a client/server application that electronically manages patient medication by tracking patient treatment and medication inventory. The HeliTrax client application uses an AT&T 8525 smartphone to create an interactive environment between the patient and medical caregivers. Leveraging the multimedia capabilities of the smartphone, patients can reach medical staff via mobile email while also using HeliTrax to communicate -- with supporting photographs if necessary -- such things as reactions to the medication, side effects, and disease symptoms.

The application is also able to deliver alert messages to patients when, for example, the patient takes an incorrect dosage volume or if the dosage is taken on the incorrect day, all the while allowing medical staff to track patient progress and drug performance in near real-time.

Device loss protection from Trust Digital helps ensure that HeliTrax is compliant with security requirements contained in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. The Trust Digital software client ensures that all patient data stored on the smartphone is protected by a power-on password and automatic encryption of the device and removable media. A self-service portal enables users to report a lost device and remotely wipe it of confidential data.

In addition, Trust Digital permits data deletion policies based on device inactivity, password failure thresholds, and over-the-air help desk actions. Trust Digital's Remote Smartphone Assist tool provides additional options to help resolve user problems such as forgotten password and application synchronization errors. CSL Behring has no access to patient data and all data is managed by a third-party company.

In a recent pilot study measuring the device's effectiveness, over 85 percent of patients found the handheld system to be a favorable management tool for hemophilia, and would recommend it to other patients. The ease and speed of the device were rated highly when compared to manually entering and tracking all information in a paper log book.

In other deployment scenarios, Trust Digital's mobility management platform is used for securing, managing and assisting the mobile workforce by enterprises and government organizations. By using Trust Digital, IT organizations are able to cost-effectively secure, rapidly deploy and centrally manage their smartphones and wireless PDAs. The company's unique software-overlay methodology simplifies how IT administrators and help desk specialists implement policies, assist users and enforce compliance for mobile applications.

"HeliTrax illustrates how smartphone applications are moving beyond email. With wireless connectivity to patients, HeliTrax simplifies the management of medical information with results reported in near real-time and trended across the entire test population," said Dan Dearing, Trust Digital's vice president of marketing and product management. "But this innovative use of smartphone technology is also about increasing the quality of life for many of its users. I'm proud to say that Trust Digital is enabling the healthcare community to provide a higher quality of care by keeping patients connected with medical caregivers and providing them with a quick and easy way to log, track and manage their treatment."
