Top Tablet Biz Apps - If You Can Find Them

By Lori Castle, Editor in Chief — December 13, 2012

It's not much of a BYOD discussion without the mention of  BYOA(pp) too. As the enterprise hires the garage developer or takes too much time to select the right MEAP, the new consumer/employee is downloading apps so they can do more than just consume information on their tablet. Some of these apps are probably running on your network right now.

As seems to be the general trend with mobile, Apple is leading the way when it comes to tablet apps. It looks like every app on the top 10 lists is made for multiple devices including the iPad.

It’s been well documented that Google lacks tablet specific apps, so users are forced to download smartphone versions which simply blow up on their tablets, but are not optimized.

BlackBerry App World, soon to be rebranded BlackBerry World, does not break out its apps by categories, so it was impossible to isolate “business” apps. However, the top 10 Playbook apps are included below. A new 4G tablet is “coming soon” and with the launch of BlackBerry 10, RIM has opened up its development world and more apps, both consumer and enterprise, will be a big focus.

If you want to browse the Windows 8 app store, you better have a Windows 8 device. A visit to the Windows 8 page on the Microsoft site provides a “small sample” of what’s there and offers the reminder: “Tap or click the Store tile on the Start screen to start browsing. (But remember, you need Windows 8 or Windows RT to use the Store.)”

So, here are the top apps in the business category for tablets; with exceptions as already noted. In a completely unscientific analysis, the “data” shows that Apple users are looking for jobs, Android users want to keep secrets and BlackBerry users are the most worldly.
